I don't own an iPhone or iPad so I couldn't sit back and control A+ without stealing one of my wife's Apple devices. With Roon it seemed like I could control all my networked systems with a ton of different devices in the house versus A+ which I could not. I was very disappointed because I love the Roon interface, multi-device capabilities, artist & album info, etc. Roon sounded somewhat flat, lacking atmosphere and depth in comparison. A+ had better detail and body to the sound. On sound quality, I preferred A+ over Roon.

I decided to audition Roon in early 2018 (not sure what version) with the free trial, mainly because of the multi-room, multi-device capabilities. On both counts, the move to A+ was clearly superior to iTunes. Most important to me is sound quality and reliability. I have been using Audirvana Plus for several years and Roon for almost a year. Late to the party, but I'll add my comments. Assuming both applications handle the memory to USB protocol the same, what else could cause this? On the one hand, yay for finding a sonic improvement but quite frustrating, because it seems there is no end to getting the 100% best possible sound from a PC.

I have not tested Tidal for differences yet My tests involved local DSD files and streaming from 24-bit Qobuz files. Roon also uses ASIO protocol, as I can see it in the Signal Path map

My DAC is an Exogal Comet Plus I have selected the ASIO protocol because it was the only one that was available to the XMOS USB 2.0 ST 301C driver that Exogal uses I am not really happy about this because I have pretty much gotten used to Roon and love the integration. The difference I am hearing is more than the difference I heard when comparing Tidal to Qobuz (Qobuz sounds better cleaner more incisive, more 'direct' sound) Ĭomparing Roon to Audirvana There is more dynamic contrast with Audirvana Roon sounds flatter and less engaging when doing back and forth using same tracks With Aud, vocals have more "vibrancy" and focus overall sound has more life to it If I didn't do the back and forth I would not have believed this. Through my headphones I can clearly hear that Audirvana is superior to Roon.

The MiniDSP may eventually be pressed into active crossover duty, with the upcoming PFM Special speakers that I'm finally going to build next year.I recently installed Audirvana on my Win 10 Pro PC (also has Roon) to test the SQ differences. Oh yeah, and I also have a MiniDSP 4x10 running as a pre-amp between my computer and the FrankenAmp. I think I switched the speakers from the Royd Seven to the Royd Sintra. My office's computer is running with my FrankenAmp: a dual mono affair with some old Hammond laminated transformers, spare Avondale CAP6 modules, and the old NAPA5 amp boards from my Naim NAP110.

I'll soon move my NCC220 QUDOS Voyagers from my office into there, as soon as I finish a modification to remove the inductors from the output stage's power supply (converting it from CLCLC to CCC). The system in the family room got the Royd RR3 from my office, and is currently running an Avondale NCC200 stereo amp, with a stacked Meanwell SMPS power supply. Earlier in the year I built a set of Ergo IX speakers (designed by and more recently finished my mono amps with Avondale NCC300 using their NCM1 power supplies.
